A feature documentary about Ric Weiland: the second employee at Microsoft, a founding architect of the personal computer, and one of the largest LGBTQ+ philanthropists in American history.
Ric Weiland was one of Microsoft’s first employees. His work on early personal-computer software helped shape a young industry. He later devoted his wealth and energy to philanthropy, while privately living with depression. Through his journals and the people closest to him, the film explores the distance between his public impact and his inner life.
Yes I Am - The Ric Weiland Story is the first documentary made with full, unrestricted access to Ric's Stanford archive, sixty-five bankers boxes of journals, letters, and photographs held by Stanford University Libraries. It features Bill Gates on camera for the first time about his oldest friend, Zachary Quinto voicing Ric's own diary entries, and animated recreations by Neely Goniodsky that bring Ric's inner life to the screen.
Following its 2021 festival debut, the film screened at Mountainfilm, Inside Out Toronto, Provincetown, Seattle Queer, and other festivals. It received Special Recognition at the 35th GLAAD Media Awards in 2024. Screening and filmmaker inquiries are welcome internationally, with availability confirmed for each territory and event.
In 2024, Yes I Am - The Ric Weiland Story received Special Recognition at the 35th GLAAD Media Awards. The awards celebrate fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of the LGBTQ+ community.
Ric's own photographs, personal journals, and archival footage, surfaced from the Stanford Weiland collection for the first time.
